Meira Kumar will file her nominations in the presence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and a number of opposition leaders. While acknowledging the lack of JD (U)'s support, Meira Kumar maintained that it was common in politics. Though a positive gesture in support of Ms Swaraj, the BJP leadership grew uncomfortable over the remarks and hence, Ms Sushma Swaraj has to take the cudgils against Meira Kumar. NDA's Ramnath Kovind is from Koli community which is not included in SC category in Karnataka.
Kumar, who will contest against NDA's Ram Nath Kovind for the post of president, described the presidential poll as a "battle of ideologies" and not a "Dalit versus Dalit" fight as was being out made out by some. Kumar said she will begin her campaign from Gujarat's Sabarmati Ashram.
"I have written to the collegium of MPs and MLAs and asked for their support".
"But when Dalits contest, their caste is being discussed and their virtues become subordinate. For this very reason, on the plank of this ideology I will compete", Meira Kumar added. "Caste needs to be buried and the society needs to move forward", she said.
Responding to a question on the projection of the social identity of both candidates, Kumar said such unfortunate circumstances come about when the candidates are Dalits. "I don't think the caste identification should play a role", she added. She said even a single attack against Dalit should be condemned. This is my fight, I have said in the beginning that I am fighting for this ideology: "destruction of the caste system". "I have requested them to listen to the inner voice of conscience", she said.
Even Meira Kumar's role in allotting 6, Krishna Menon Marg in Delhi for a memorial to her father Jagjivan Ram is also being raised.
The Twitter handle of the Indian National Congress, reminded Swaraj of the kind words she had said to Kumar in the speech.
She is likely to visit Rajghat-Mahatma Gandhi's memorial-before filing her nomination papers in Parliament on Wednesday.
