Kerr hands over $11m of jewellery to United States govt

Miranda - who is married to Snapchat tycoon Evan Spiegel and has six-year-old son Flynn with ex-husband Orlando Bloom - surrendered $8.1 million in jewellery from her safe-deposit box in Los Angeles over to the US Justice Department last Friday (23.06.17) as part of worldwide lawsuits alleging the money for the gifts was illegally taken from a Malaysian sovereign-wealth fund. It's alleged that he siphoned huge sums from a government fund called 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), which was originally created for the goal of economic development. I will never understand why people with means do the most.

"Miranda Kerr cooperated fully and pledged to turn over the gifts of jewellery to the government", he said.

Model Miranda Kerr poses during a photocall as she arrives to attend a dinner organized by French luxury group Louis Vuitton for the launching of new leather accessories in Paris, France, April 11, 2017. 1MDB was set up by current Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. According to The Guardian, prosecutors allege that almost $30 million was misappropriated to buy jewlery for Razak's wife.

Earlier this month, Leonardo DiCaprio turned over Marlon Brando's Oscar, and over $12 million worth of Picasso and Jean-Michel Basquiat artwork which were gifted to him by Low. Although I'm sure they appreciate the elaborate gifts, not going to lie.

The U.S. Justice Department is now helping the country by seizing items purchased with the stolen money and returning them, according to filings by the DoJ in a civil lawsuit, and is looking to retrieve a total of $1.7 billion in assets bought with the misappropriated funds.

Neither Kerr nor DiCaprio are accused of any crime. Among those pieces surrendered is a $3.8 million 8.88-carat diamond pendant from New York-based designer Lorraine Schwartz. The painting was said to be a gift from Jho Low. Both were produced by Red Granite, founded by Najib's stepson, Riza Aziz.
