Slater declined to discuss any of the names on the list or whether any of those members were at the baseball practice, only saying he would not characterize it as a "hit list". He was also known to frequent the local libraries in Alexandria.
Law enforcement officials shared other details Wednesday that suggested Hodgkinson may have been planning to return to IL.
"I think he was struggling in a lot of aspects of his life", Slater said. After arriving in Washington from his home in IL, he took part in a demonstration to protest Republican tax policy - not activity that would arouse suspicion. The main one, which is not a surprise by this point, is that the shooter, James Thomas Hodgkinson, acted alone and had no terrorist connections.
Image of James Hodgkinson.President Donald Trump on June 14, 2017 said the shooter who perpetrated the GOP congressional baseball practice attack is dead. They did not detail the names.
In his vehicle, investigators found a laptop computer, a cellphone and a digital camera.
Investigators say he armed himself with two weapons, a 7.62mm caliber SKS rifle and a 9mm handgun, both of which were determined to have been purchased legally. He was "acting alone" when he opened fire, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.
Slater said Hodgkinson was not known to have a history of diagnosed mental illness, though he displayed "anger management" issues. "He was married for 30 years, and it appears that that marriage was not going so well", Slater said.
Slater said Hodgkinson "suffered from taking some prescription medication".
Hodgkinson also visited the office of Vermont Sen.
Former neighbors and family members, meanwhile, said their encounters with Hodgkinson were marked by displays of simmering anger and odd behavior. When he heard the players were Republican, the witness said he lingered near the field.
The FBI confirmed Wednesday that an account from Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.), who told reporters last week that he spoke briefly on the morning of the shooting with Hodgkinson, who asked him: "Is this the Republican or Democrat baseball team?"
"I told him they were Republicans". Between April and June, Hodgkinson visited the storage unit 43 times, sometimes twice a day. On the day of the shooting, he went to the unit at 6:23 a.m. and left at 6:35 a.m. Officials said they also searched the van he had been living out of in the parking lot of the YMCA and found indications that he meant to go home on his computer.
Slater said Hodgkinson fired at least 50 rounds from the rifle and 10 additional rounds from the handgun before two U.S. Capitol Police officers and Alexandria police returned fire. For years he'd ranted about their tax plans on social media and in letters to newspapers. Scalise was shot once and gravely injured. Scalise remains hospitalized, and his condition was upgraded to fair on Wednesday. Hodgkinson also had email communications with the two USA senators for Illinois - Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin.
After the shooting, investigators searched Hodgkinson's home in IL and a storage facility in Alexandria he began renting in April. Hodgkinson never said anything during the shooting or after, before he died.
