When Ainge made these comments, and they were coupled with the aforementioned report, the consensus was that the Celtics were eyeing Jackson at third overall. He was one of five finalists for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award.
Boston selected Jayson Tatum (Chaminade) with the No. 3 pick Thursday in NY, adding a 6-foot-8 small forward who was a polished scoring threat during his lone season at Duke. Butler did end up leaving the Bulls as CDA News reported. Ainge didn't seem to be bothered with Jackson's disinterest with the Celtics, but the team's president of basketball operations wasn't too thrilled with flying across the country for nothing.
Tatum, a Third Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, averaged 16.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.1 blocks, while shooting 45.2 percent from the field for the Blue Devils. If chosen, he would be the first Wildcat drafted since 2008 when Michael Beasley was the No. 2 overall pick by Miami and Bill Walker went No. 47 to Washington (traded to Boston). All signs pointed to fireworks.
It's a matter of preference, and Jackson clearly preferred not to play for Boston.
But Jackson apparently doesn't want to become a Celtic and reportedly has refused to work out for the organization without an assurance that he will be chosen by them and not traded. He was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. N.C. State last produced a lottery pick in 2013 when Durham's T.J. Warren, that season's ACC player of the year, went to Phoenix at No. 13. Didn't matter, as those talks dissipated.
Duke Forward Jayson Tatum is obviously the best prospect - likely to get his name called in the first three picks. It's just not a move-the-dial, fire-up-the-fan-base pick.
"LeBron James, he's the difference", the 19-year-old St. Louis native said. "I don't understand that", he said. The feeling is everything I wished for and more I'm trying not to cry right now. "I can't wait to go and learn from coach (Brad) Stevens and Isaiah Thomas and just everybody on that roster".
But once again we're talking about potential, which of course is another word for unpredictable. "It would be something me and my agent, we'll go over and, you know, if it happens, it happens". And considering the fact Ainge played in Sacramento, he knew that was a waste of time. Horford played considerably better at forward then in the paint past year and that was expected. The Celtics handed over their top pick to the 76ers within the past week. "He's a great kid, has great work ethic".
"This is the guy we wanted", said Grousbeck. "Now we've got a lot of position-less players that can dribble, pass, and shoot". "That's a good thing".
In Boston, Tatum will be competing for playing time on the wing with players like Brown and Jae Crowder, though the Celtics could potentially deal one of those players.
"Danny Ainge was insane back then, so I had some background info on him".
He added, "I think it'd be great to play in Boston". I know someone wrote that that was difference, but that's not the case.
"He's a really skilled player, a really talented scorer", Stevens later told the media. Boston did not reach the NBA Finals, or win their trophy.
"They did a little bit of moving around with their pick", Jackson said.
Translation: Boston can build for now and build for later. I'm going to be the best player I can be.
This was the 15th draft that Ainge has presided over. Both Fraschilla and Bilas will be part of the draft night coverage. "We feel like we have some opportunities to do some things this summer".
