Canadiens send defenceman Nathan Beaulieu to Sabres for third-round pick

The Buffalo Sabres needed to bolster their blueline and there was a possibility that the Montreal Canadiens were going to lose d-man Nathan Beaulieu to the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

The native of Strathroy, Ontario, has played in 225 career National Hockey League regular-season games, all with Montreal, and has accumulated seven goals and 53 assists for 60 points.

Before that Nate split time between Montreal and Hamilton (the Habs old AHL affiliate) from 2012-13 to 2014-15.

In 225 career regular-season games, Beaulieu has 60 points (7-53) and 152 penalty minutes.

Last season, the defenceman struggled.

All of a sudden, Montreal's left side defensive depth has taken a major hit with Beaulieu gone as well as top prospect Mikhail Sergachev who was dealt in exchange for Jonathan Drouin back on Thursday.

He added one assist in five playoff games.

"Obviously, it's disappointing", Beaulieu said of being a healthy scratch against NY, per the Montreal Gazette.

"Over the last three seasons, there have been moments when Beaulieu has looked terrific on the ice, but like most young defensemen, consistency has been a problem".
