An Aussie fond of cheeseheads: Jason Day all in on Wisconsin

An Aussie fond of cheeseheads: Jason Day all in on Wisconsin

Ahead of the Erin Hills' debut at the U.S. Open this week, much has been made of the long, thick fescue that should prove to be at least a one-shot penalty to any golfer that misses the fairway - but the fescue may not end up being the toughest hazard on the course.

Spieth agreed the 7,441-yard layout could often punish excessively aggressive players.

Oda played a practice round Sunday at Erin Hills with Brad Dalke, who plays for Oklahoma, and quickly discovered the hazards of the course.

Johnson had said he would not travel to Erin Hills until the birth of his second child with his expectant partner Paulina Gretzky. "Someone who has very good control of the ball off tee will have plenty of scoring opportunities, given the conditions that we're expecting".

"I really wasn't in contention, but I was up around the top", said Stricker.

And McIlroy thinks the players who are complaining should focus on their game and not the course.

Having dealt with the controversial rulings of recent renewals and a serious backlash in choosing Chamber's Bay as the 2015 host venue, it certainly feels like preparations couldn't have gone any better for Erin Hills this time 'round. I don't know. The setups have changed.

Strange, now working as a television analyst, backed Johnson to complete the double.

Now, they said they whacked it because of weather, not to satiate players.

"Wherever DJ plays, he's the longest out there. But I think looking at it now, it just happened to be luck, to be honest".

Day likes the course, which is being used for a US Open for the first time. No one was happier than Rory McIlroy.

The Northern Irish star has played only one event since the Masters after rib and back problems forced him to withdraw from the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Tall fescue grass on the fourth, 12th, 14th and 18th holes was being cut as McIlroy gave his pre-tournament press conference, which caught the 2011 champion by surprise. "I remember the closing four holes, and then each hole starts to reappear when I go out and play it [this week]", Spieth said Tuesday. I understand why they cut it, but these fairways are so wide I think even Phil Mickelson could hit them (hopefully we get to find out of that's true).

The other players in the field with Southern Nevada ties are Las Vegas native Scott Piercy, former UNLV star Adam Scott, Las Vegas resident and former Rebel Charley Hoffman and current Rebel John Oda.

Kevin Na shows how hard the US Open course is at Erin Hills if you stray from the fairways.

During his Memorial Tournament two weeks ago, Jack Nicklaus, victor of a record 18 major titles, speculated that Woods' 14 titles in a 46-major span, starting at age 21, emboldened a generation of players to believe they could compete with the best right away.

The Australian, now ranked three in the world, has enjoyed a return to form in recent weeks and says he has "a lot more confidence" following two recent good showings on the PGA Tour.

It's a tough challenge that Jason Day welcomes.

The storms moved in overnight and kept pounding Erin Hills through the morning, closing the course for some 3 hours with just two practice days remaining before the U.S. Open. Don't blast your drives 70 yards wide left or right and avoid bogeys when you miss greens, and you should be good to go. "I think it's an exciting finishing hole".
