Jays Journal is introducing a new weekly series where writers take a look at the latest Blue Jays rumor or news piece from the viewpoint of an optimist, a pessimist, and a realist.
In part because they've now lost four in a row to their division rivals, the Jays are now a worrisome 6 1/2 games out of first in the AL East. He was mobilized with a neck brace, placed on a stretcher and carted off the field.
The Blue Jays have put star third baseman Josh Donaldson on the 10-day disabled list with a right calf injury. I just hope Gibby's reasoning wasn't motivated by giving him a chance at picking up the win.
Zach Britton allowed one run and three hits in the ninth but picked up his fifth save of the season and his 54th straight converted save opportunity overall.
Smoak hit his first home run of the season with two outs in the fourth to give Toronto a 3-1 lead.
Home plate umpire Dale Scott sustained a concussion in the eighth inning when he was struck in the facemask by a foul tip.
There were a few positives on the night for the Blue Jays.
Gausman (1-0) allowed two walks and struck out three in his third start of the season.
The Blue Jays may have foreseen a favourable matchup in sending Aaron Sanchez, one of their two young stud starting pitchers, to the mound Friday night in an attempt to snap the club's six-game losing streak.
Wade Miley (1-0) threw six innings for the victory.
Justin Smoak crushed his first home run of the year in Friday's loss to the Orioles.
But even that didn't work out, as last year's American League ERA champion surrendered a two-run lead that was handed to him after four innings.
On a broken-bat hit by Toronto's Kendrys Morales in the second, the jagged barrel sailed directly back toward the stands. But the Orioles perhaps pushed their luck a little too far, as Asher hit Bautista leading off the 7th, advancing to second when Tulo poked a ball through the middle with one out. Hyun Soo Kim then doubled and Hardy belted his first homer of the season to give Baltimore a 4-3 lead. Scott was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a concussion.
The Orioles love to slaughter the Jays with the long ball, as we saw with their two wins to start the season back in Baltimore.
Blue Jays: INF/OF Chris Coghlan was selected from Buffalo to replace Donaldson. He made the start at third base and went 0 for 2 at the plate.
Catcher/first baseman Juan Graterol was designated for assignment to make room for Coghlan on the 40-man roster.
The Orioles threatened in the seventh inning when Schoop hit a one-out double and moved to third on a wild pitch.
The incident occurred with Baltimore holding a 5-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning at Rogers Centre.
