Thunder's Russell ties 55-year-old NBA record

"I'm sure he's gonna pass Oscar for the most triple doubles, but I just didn't want it to be here".

He appeared focused on getting those necessary six assists out of the way early on Friday, perhaps to his detriment.

"I could never say in a million years that I would ever think that was even possible", Westbrook told ESPN.

Westbrook came into the night with 2,480 points (a league-leading 31.8 per game), 831 rebounds (10.7 per game), and 814 assists (10.4 per game) on the season.

Devin Booker scored 21 of his 37 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Suns, and T.J. Warren had 23 as the Suns (23-57) snapped a 13-game losing streak.

'From the start of the game, Russ was chasing history, ' Booker said.

He almost got his 42nd on Wednesday night in Memphis but a long rebound near the end of the game went right over his head and he fell just one board shy of the record.

Russell Westbrook is the second player in National Basketball Association history to average a triple-double for a season.

Westbrook finished with 23 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in the Thunder's 120-99 loss to the Suns on Friday. He went into the Suns practice court to take a bunch of shots, and then went to the showers while reporters from all over the country waited for him.

"Get your mind right", he explained. "But it wasn't falling for me tonight". "He was still in the game down 20, 25, and you could see he was being real passive, so we just stayed home; and if he was going to do a drop-off, we were going to foul and make them earn it".

Westbrook began averaging a triple-double on November 29 against the New York Knicks and has maintained the averages, never dropping below 10 in any category. "I've seen enough miraculous things this year: At Dallas, at Orlando and some other places..." I just said, you know what, he gets hot around the 3-point line, we make a couple of shots. I just didn't want it to be here.

He missed his first 11 shots before sinking a 17-footer with 50.4 seconds left in the half. The Cavs now lead the East by one game over Boston and own the tiebreaker between the two clubs with three games to play for each team.

Julius Randle scored 25 points and Brandon Ingram added 11 points as the Lakers shot 44.2 from the field (38-for-86).

Russell Westbrook will finish the season as only the 2nd player in National Basketball Association history to average a triple-double. There is still a vote pending when the regular season finishes.

Entering the fourth quarter with 16 points, Booker exploded for 21, making 7-of-11 field goal attempts, including a trio of 3s plus going a flawless 4-of-4 from the foul line.

While the Warriors are expecting Durant's return, they could be without two-time reigning MVP Stephen Curry because of a bruised knee.

Westbrook needed only six assists to join the record Robertson set in the 1961-62 for the Cincnnati Royals. Suns won for the first time since they shut down a healthy Eric Bledsoe for the season. Westbrook clearly hunted for the record as he tried to pick up those final two assists, and the Phoenix crowd hung on every move.

Oklahoma City: PG - Russell Westbrook, SG - Victor Oladipo, SF - Andre Robertson, PF - Taj Gibson, C - Steven Adams. Both of them are spotted at different directions, the Thunder had 45 wins in total.

Harden put up some wonderful numbers in his triple-double against the Knicks on New Year's Eve, a 129-122 victory.

The Thunder will be back in action on Sunday in Denver when it takes on the Nuggets.

The environment didn't quite reflect Westbrook's numbers or the Suns' blowout, though.

The Thunder are facing Suns at Phoenix for their fourth match in this season.
