NC health officials report 15 more flu deaths

Health officials say there have been 3,715 laboratory-confirmed cases of the flu in DE for the 2016-2017 as of March 25th. There have been 14 deaths total in DE from influenza this season.

Fifteen new flu deaths were reported in North Carolina last week, bringing the total number of deaths for the season so far to 156, according to numbers released Thursday by the North Carolina Department of Health.

"Influenza A (H3N2) viruses have been most common overall this season and they continue to predominate in public health laboratories, but there has been an increasing proportion of influenza B viruses detected in recent weeks", the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted in a recent update. Health officials were not able to verify his vaccination status. Oklahoma County has had 13 deaths.

Health officials said the increase in flu death numbers this week is due to late reports on deaths that occurred mostly at the end of January through the beginning of February.

One child between the ages of 5 and 17-years-old died earlier in the season, and two patients who were up to 4-years-old also died from the flu.

According to the health department, the number of flu-associated hospitalizations continues to drop.

Most of those - 42 - were patients ages 65 and older. "The flu vaccine is still the best method of protection and recommended for everyone six months of age and older".
