After teasing Southern California residents on Thursday to keep their Friday night open, the Grammy victor announced a surprise performance near Joshua Tree ahead of her big Sunday appearance at Coachella.
In the middle of a set packed with old songs like Ribs, Tennis Court and Team, as well as recent singles Green Light and Liability, came a new song. It's a bummer, because Lorde's lyrics are the best parts of her songs - tied, of course, with the melodies and the general vibe she manages to express. Talking about the song before singing it, she said that it was about the good, insane part of living in your twenties.
The chorus goes: "I'm blowing shit up with homemade dynamite". There, Lorde debuted a new track called "Sober".
"(It) bounced with breathless confidence, powered by attitude and pop hooks", said the publication. You can check out a clip of that, and other parts of the show, below.
This will be Lorde's first performance in two and a half years and possibly the smallest stage she will ever play to a public audience for the rest of her career.
Lorde has promised her next song is "my favourite thing I've ever done". Today, having known exactly what her fans are after, Lorde used her appearance at the 2017 Coachella festival to introduce fans to a new track, "Homemade Dynamite".
