Starting on Friday, the Blue Jays are scheduled to face Mike Trout and the Angels in Los Angeles for the weekend, and are short two starters due to Happ's elbow inflammation and Sanchez's blister problems. Injuries to Josh Donaldson, J.A. Happ, and Aaron Sanchez have made matters worse as the Blue Jays are now tasked with somehow staying in the playoff race without their key players.
In a matter of just 72 hours, the Toronto Blue Jays have lost Aaron Sánchez, J.A Happ and now their star third baseman.
It sounds like the injury-riddled Jays have dodged a bullet with this injury, as it remains to be seen if Happ will even land on the disabled list. Given this diagnosis, that appears unlikely, but the Blue Jays also haven't announced how long he might be sidelined.
A 20-game victor a year ago, Happ is 0-3 this season with a 4.50 earned-run average. Last season, he won 20 games for the first time in his career, going 20-4 with a 3.18 ERA, 1.169 WHIP and 163 strikeouts in 195.0 innings.
Latos isn't on the 40-man roster, so his addition will require a corresponding 40-man roster move.
Toronto (2-10) may try to flip Happ to a contender if it continues to struggle this season.
"From our end of it, you're always concerned when you go through ruts", Gibbons said. Not good news for a team that really needs to start scoring.
