"The victories in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Uttarakhand have reconfirmed that Modi is the most dominant political leader", P Chidambaram, a former minister in the Congress government and Modi critic, told DW.
On Saturday the gamble paid off: Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) scored a thumping victory in Uttar Pradesh, home to one in six Indians, winning the biggest majority in the state for any party since 1977.
Who will be the next chief minister of Uttar Pradesh?
How big is the BJP win in UP can be measured by the fact that it is the BJP's best performance ever in the state, while it is the worst ever performance by the Congress since 1977 and by the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party from the time of their formation.
With this new mandate, Modi will likely continue to go after financial corruption. In a political gamble, Modi a year ago ordered all 500- and 1,000-rupee notes pulled from circulation, a bid to force anyone who held large stashes of unreported wealth to come clean.
The win clears a path to victory for Modi at a 2019 general election, and gives him a free hand to consolidate his grip over a state that sends the highest number of federal lawmakers to parliament.
Economists now expect Modi to launch initiatives aimed at flushing out ill-gotten gains from real estate, gold and campaign finance. The question is: who needs to normalize more, India or Pakistan?
"This is a stupendous achievement", said Ashok Malik, a fellow with the Observer Research Foundation, based in New Delhi.
Modi's party has made substantial inroads in India's national politics since the beginning of last year, and now holds around half of 31 local assemblies - 29 states and two union territories - under its control, up from 11 assemblies in January last year. "Power is an opportunity to serve", PM Modi said. "The problem in India is that people think reforms are pro-rich".
With Goa polls throwing up a fractured verdict, both the BJP and the Congress legislature parties are meeting today to decide their respective leaders and work out strategies to form government in the state.
"On behalf of Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and the entire Congress leadership, we thank the voters and party workers of Punjab, Goa and Manipur for electing the Congress and reposing faith in its ideals and policies", he added. "This victory is unprecedented in many ways", Shah said. These three parties, who are allies of the NDA government, have extended their support to BJP that still needs one more seat to cross the half way mark.
