An Oklahoma Senator is under investigation by police after allegedly being with a teenage boy in a hotel.
The senator is under investigation after police responded on March 9 to a request for a welfare check at a Moore Super 8 motel where officers found Shortey with a minor male in a room rented in the senator's name. (The age of consent in Oklahoma is 16.) A relative of the teen became concerned after finding text messages between Shortey and the boy on the teen's phone. When the police arrived 30 minutes later for a welfare check, they found Shortey with a juvenile male. "The circumstances surrounding this incident are now under investigation and no additional information can be released at this time".
Shortey has not spoken publicly about the investigation.
Shortey has not been arrested or charged in the incident. The resolution accuses Shortey of "disorderly behavior". His membership on the Committee on Retirement and Insurance, Committee on Judiciary and Committee on Appropriations were also suspended.
Police are now investigating the relationship between the teen and the 35-year-old politician by reviewing text messages.
According to his Senate biography, Shortey is a member of the Rosebud Sioux Indian Tribe and spent part of his childhood on the tribe's South Dakota reservation before moving to Oklahoma. However, he will have virtually no power or authority.
Shortey can still vote on the Senate floor.
The Oklahoma Republican Party strongly rebuked Shortey in a news release.
The Oklahoma Democratic party says Shortey should suspend himself from official activities. "We have reached out to Senator Shortey for comment and have not heard back from him at this time". "We are very excited for the opportunity to have Mr. Trump here", he said announcing a rally for Trump at the Oklahoma State Fair. We will await to see how this case progresses before determining next steps.
