How The Vampire Diaries Was Originally Supposed to End

Tune into The Vampire Diaries finale tonight at 9 p.m. EST on CW.

So. how'd it all end? While the night marks the end of an era, the bigger headline is the return of Nina Dobrev as the show's original main character, Elena Gilbert.

Bonnie tells Caroline: "I'm gonna save the world".

No, it doesn't make a whole lot of plot sense that Stefan would have to sacrifice himself for Katherine to die and for hell to burn, but it makes some emotional sense because this show has always been about two brothers and their codependent, destructive, self-sacrificing, all-encompassing love for one another.

Bonnie summons all her powers, and with the help of Grams and her entire lineage of witches, going back to Colonial times, transfer the bell-tower hellfire through the tunnels beneath Mystic Falls, and back to where it came from. Both wanted to give up their lives to redeem themselves from their nasty pasts. Damon says. Yes Damon, Stefan is definitely going to do that.

At first, it seemed like Damon "won" the war, compelling Stefan to leave town. And then I hear this voice, Julie coming in the doorway, saying, 'Michael, it's time, '" recalled Malarkey, who responded by thinking, "Oh shit. "Finally, that Damon and Elena find theirs was also important according to Kevin Williamson".

Caroline may be the mother of his children and the woman he unrequitedly loves (which is super creepy, by the way, given that she was very recently his high school student), but Elena is his family, too. Elena and Damon got to live happily ever, after.

She continued, "So much has changed for all of us". Caroline packs up the things for the girls but Alaric reminds her what its like to live without your mother. Matt Donovan got a bench. and also remained sheriff.

But as fans saw, it was ultimately Stefan who died because Julie admitted that she "felt like we had to make a commitment to seeing Damon and Elena through to the end". For Elena, it meant reuniting with her parents, Jenna (we're crying again just thinking about it) and uncle John.

Caroline's heart was broken in the finale, but when she reunited with Elena she did find some comfort.

If Damon confided that Hell could reopen for him in season 8 of The Vampire Diaries, he finally found peace. They explained that they didn't foresee the saga lasting so many seasons, and they had to scrap their original ending in order to continue their characters' story lines. "I had this surreal moment where I just looked at [Ian and Nina] and I just thought, 'Oh my goodness, we're doing a very similar scene to what we did eight years ago yet the way our brains are wired and our priorities have completely shifted.' It's just wonderful how you can take people eight years later, plop them in the exact same situation, and they're completely different human beings".
