Hindu firebrand Yogi Adityanath picked as Uttar Pradesh chief minister

As the name of Yogi Adityanath was announced as Uttar Pradesh chief minister, celebration began at his native village Panchur in district Pauri. But with the elevation of Hindutva icon Yogi Adityanath as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, will the path of development be junked? That could have been done to balance out the caste combination - Adityanath is a Rajput and his two deputies (deputy chief ministers) Keshav Prasad Maurya is from most backward caste and Dinesh Sharma is a Brahmin.

Yogi, according to those present in the meet, was given a rapturous welcome by his party colleagues. The decision to appoint Adityanath was taken when Rajnath even scuttled PM's personal favourite Union minister Manoj Sinha in the 11th hour. However, he has denied any knowledge of the development so far. Born July 1, 1959, in Mohanpura, Ghazipur district, Sinha was inducted as a member of the BJP National Council in 1989.

Sinha now holds two positions-minister of state (Independent Charge) of communications and minister of state for railways.

The RSS, which at one point was rooting for someone more seasoned with wider acceptability and administrative acumen, agreed to Modi's proposal, clearing the decks for Adityanath's appointment. The BJP'scentral leadership had initially thought that an OBC leader could be chosen as the chief minister since the non-Yadav OBCs had voted for the party in this election.

"There is a categorical, unambiguous message being sent by Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi". The good work eventually ensured that he also got the independent charge of the ministry of communication.

Ending the suspense exactly a week after BJP won a three- fourths majority in the key Hindi heartland state and stormed back to power after 15 years, the 44-year-old five-term MP from Gorakhpur was unanimously elected the BJP legislature party leader at a meeting of the newly elected MLAs. It has 325 seats, including its allies, in the 17th Vidhan Sabha.

In a surprise twist, the BJP could name its Gorakhpur lawmaker Yogi Adityanath as the next Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

He once compared Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan to a Pakistani terrorist leader Hafiz Saeed, reports say.
