Gennady Golovkin's streak of 23 straight knockouts came to an end against Brooklyn's Daniel Jacobs, who forced "GGG" to go 12 rounds for the first time in his career Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in front of a crowd of 19,939.
The fight between Daniel Jacobs and Gennady Golovkin will take place at Madison Square Garden in NY on Saturday, 9:00 pm. Jacobs is probably the best fight Golovkin could get right now at 160 pounds, and he's a serious puncher, so he has an outside chance if he can hurt Golovkin early.
Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has something of a Mike Tyson aura about him, acknowledged Daniel "Miracle Man" Jacobs, but don't expect the challenger to feel intimidated in their title clash on Saturday. It was the first time Golovkin had gone all 12 rounds in his professional career.
GGG hasn't fought at home since 2010, when he won the WBA crown against Nilson Julio Tapia.
"I thought I won it by at least two rounds, minimum". Golovkin edged it 114-113 on the cards of Max DeLuca and Don Trella, while Steve Weisfeld had GGG ahead 115-112.
Gennady Golovkin started to land heavier comobos in the later rounds, with an apparent lead over fellow middleweight champion Danny Jacobs. Jacobs survived the round, but GGG kept up the pressure and it looked for certain that the Kazahkstani wrecking machine was destined to score his 24 consecutive knockout. They want the big fight [for Golovkin against Canelo Alvarez], and Daniel Jacobs got X'd out.
"Of course, I'm ready [to fight Canelo]", Golovkin told HBO.
"I think I won the fight", said Jacobs. He's rumored to return in June to face Billy Joe Saunders, who holds the only middleweight belt not owned by Golvokin, in a fight that could take place in Golovkin's native Kazakhstan. He's undefeated in 29 fights, 22 wins by KO, and he's the best welterweight in the world in the deepest division in boxing.
People questioned whether Golovkin could respond when forced to box by his opponent. I knew I had to go out there, fight the best, and earn my respect. "I think these fans support me on the decision". In the process, the unheralded Thai saddled Chocolatito with his first defeat in 47 fights and nearly certainly knocked him off the top perch in the unofficial pound-for-pound ratings.
Nearly certainly, after such a close fight with Jacobs, there will be a rematch somewhere down the line.
At the start of the fight, Golovkin landed some nice shots but ultimately, Jacobs was fighting a defensive style that seemed to frustrate Golovkin.
'This is boxing, I need the decision, ' the 34-year-old Golovkin said. "I am like an animal for this fight".
