Dortmund's Mario Goetze to miss rest of season with metabolic disorder

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that Mario Gotze will miss the remainder of the season, insisting that this is good news for the player.

The Dortmund website said "Good news for Mario Goetze: Borussia Dortmund's Germany global speaks positively about the first phase of his treatment", but includes no direct quotes. In the meantime, the 2014 FIFA World Cup victor will pursue his own individual training programme.

"The long term target for the player is to be fully fit and ready to play for the start of next season", the club said.

Champions League quarter-finalists Dortmund are third in the Bundesliga, 16 points behind leaders Bayern Munich with 10 matches remaining, and host second-bottom Ingolstadt on Friday.

If the player responds well to the treatment then he can return to training in the early summer.

The club had pulled Götze out of training on February 27, shortly after his "metabolic disturbances" were diagnosed.

The Germany worldwide endured a hard few seasons after the 2014 world cup and moved back to Dortmund after a three-year spell at Bayern Munich.

Goetze, who has won 62 caps for Germany, was then sent for specialist help and Borussia's CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has said it would not be a "short-term issue".
