They were given a choice to discontinue abortions and receive the funds, or do without if they continue.

"Offering money to Planned Parenthood to abandon our patients and our values is not a deal that we will ever accept", said Dawn Laguens, the organization's executive vice president.

The bill, called the American Health Care Act, which was introduced Monday, would keep the ACA's policy regarding pre-existing conditions and allow children to remain on their parents' insurance until they turn 26. Planned Parenthood is better known for providing more than 300,000 abortions nationwide every year. Vice President Mike Pence is a vocal opponent of abortion, citing his Roman Catholic beliefs, and new USA health secretary Tom Price has supported "defunding" Planned Parenthood.

"We're at a thirty-year low for unintended pregnancy, and the number of abortions is also at a record low-and it's because of improved access to effective birth control", says Raegan McDonald-Mosley, chief medical officer of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress said that they will shortly move legislation to strip federal funds from Planned Parenthood, and a provision stating that was added to the Affordable Care Act repeal released on Monday.

At one point during his presidential campaign, the anti-abortion businessman vowed to end federal funding for the non-profit, which makes up more than half of its $1.3 billion annual revenue through central government funding.

During one of the presidential debates candidate Donald Trump said, "Millions and millions of women - cervical cancer, breast cancer - are helped by Planned Parenthood".

Some also believe it's a sign Ivanka Trump is pressuring her father not to appease his base by defunding Planned Parenthood. But if Congress passes it, millions of Americans who rely on Medicaid and other federal health programs will no longer be able to go Planned Parenthood for birth control, cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, and well-woman exams.

The push to defund Planned Parenthood, a clinic that offers reproductive healthcare like cancer screenings and contraception to 31,000 patients in MA, stems from its ability to offer abortions.

I understand completely the moral opposition some people have to abortion. Trump, she said, had been "sympathetic to a woman's right to choose until it was politically unpopular" for him.

Planned Parenthood is not about to give up their fight for women's reproductive rights anytime soon. At the same time, he does not want to lose favor among his own party by standing up for Planned Parenthood, although he has indicated on multiple occasions that he recognizes the work they do is important.
