Adrian Peterson free agency: Raiders emerge among 3 best fits for RB

Still, on Thursday, Spielman said of Peterson, "Adrian is probably going to go down as one of the greatest Vikings".

The Minnesota Vikings have signed free-agent running back Latavius Murray, the team announced Thursday.

The Vikings announced they would not pick up the $18 million contract option for Peterson for 2017 on February 28, after he had made $12 million in 2016. He visited with the Seahawks last weekend, but their signing of Eddie Lacy would seem to cross Seattle off the list. The Raiders have not expressed much interest in bringing back Murray, who was taken by them in the sixth round of the 2013 draft out of of Central Florida.

Murray rushed for 1,066 yards in 2015 and made the Pro Bowl before falling off to 788 yards last season.

With Murray taking over, Peterson is not expected to be re-signed.

For years Peterson was an electric runner and was the core of the Vikings' offense.

In the Raiders' last four games, Murray's rushing total went from 103 yards to 81 to 40 to 11.

With Oakland not making a strong push to re-sign Murray, despite being the team's leading rusher the last two seasons, he made the jump to Minnesota where the promise of being more of a full-time back was possible.

"There wasn't a thought in my mind to try and wear or ask for the #28", said Murray, via Instagram.

Peterson is still a free agent, and a reunion with the Vikings has always been considered a possibility for the running back. "I've been a huge fan of everything that he's done there, so it was something that I didn't even need them to tell me, and everything worked out". He finished a year ago with 195 carries for 788 yards and a career-high 12 touchdowns.
