Police officer killed, second officer hurt in Southern California shooting

Three people, including two police officers, were shot Monday in Whittier, according to multiple news reports.

A Whittier Police Department spokesman said the officers arrived on the scene responding to a call of a auto crash.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said the two officers responded to what they believed was a traffic accident in Whittier when a gang member who was "all tattooed up" began firing.

A shooting broke out, leaving the two officers and gunman injured. All three were struck by gunfire.

The name of the suspect, who also was taken to UCI Medical Center, was not released and his condition was not immediately available.

Video from KTLA showed windows on a Whitter Police Department SUV shattered, and debris scattered across the road.

Shattered glass was visible on the street next to a parked Whittier police SUV on February 20, 2017.

A sedan directly in front of the SUV had front end damage, and a weapon was visible on top of the car's trunk, the footage showed.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the sheriff's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
