New study ranks Atlanta congestion among worst in the world


Indeed, they spent an average of 41 hours in traffic jams, or 12% of total driving time, in 2016. It also utilized "market-specific criteria that affect traffic", including construction and road closures, real-time incidents, sporting and entertainment events, weather forecasts and school schedules.

The report also includes rankings and data for Ann Arbor, Saginaw, Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Kalamazoo.

It found that drivers in the UK's biggest towns and cities spent an average of five days stuck in traffic last year, with journey times in Sheffield at peak periods having increased by five per cent over the last five years. Increased congestion cost USA drivers nearly $300 billion past year in wasted time and fuel. The statistics showed drivers in Istanbul spent 25 percent of their driving time in traffic and 20 percent of their time waiting in traffic during the day.

Philadelphia ranked 51st out of 1,064 cities examined in transportation analytics firm Inrix's 2016 Global Traffic Scorecard's most congested cities.

London, Atlanta, Paris and Miami complete the top ten most congested cities in the world in 2016.

While Johannesburg has always been considered South Africa's most traffic-congested city, the Index shows a marked improvement in the biggest metropolitan municipality's ranking since 2009. Each L.A. driver came up $2,408 lighter as a result of traffic, the city as a whole $9.7 billion.

But if it's any consolation, Angelenos only spent about 13 percent of their total drive time in congestion, way behind Moscow (25 percent) and Bogota (31 percent), though on a par with NY and San Francisco. Its drivers spent an average of 23 hours in commuter congestion.

Ann Arbor was the next closest MI city to come close to sniffing Detroit's ranking as an infuriating city to drive in. San Francisco leaped forward seven spots, from No. 11, over its 2015 rank. Seattle's traffic ranked the tenth worst in the US based on time stuck in traffic.

Belgians spent an average of 21 hours in traffic jams a year ago.

Saginaw and Kalamazoo were the last two MI representatives featured on the INRIX's rankings.

Now the city's been named as one of the most congested places in the UK. There are 1,064 cities ranked from 38 countries around the world.
