"I couldn't have picked a better team", he said about the rest of the cabinet, specifically mentioning these national security team members: "General Mattis, General Flynn, General Kelly, Dan Coates".
Graham discussed his support for Tillerson in an interview on CBS' "Face The Nation". But even if Tillerson isn't approved by the committee to be secretary of state, his nomination could still be considered by the full Senate - a rare, but not unheard procedural tactic.
Graham also challenged President Donald Trump to support foreign aid, urging him not to take "soft power off the table". Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), all voiced their concerns with Tillerson, especially his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Though we still have concerns about his past dealings with the Russian government and President Vladimir Putin, we believe that Mr. Tillerson can be an effective advocate for USA interests.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he was confident that all of Trump's cabinet nominees will be confirmed. "In my office visit he said that when America doesn't lead, other people will, and the vacuum is always filled by bad actors". He said that we have to have a foreign policy that engages the world. He's still "cautious" about this decision, but he has more confidence now after speaking with Tillerson on Russian Federation.
Rubio, who challenged Trump for the GOP nomination previous year, clashed with Tillerson at a hearing his month.
However, in a joint statement released Sunday, McCain and Graham said that while they still have concerns about Tillerson, they believe he will be "an effective advocate for US interests" and they will therefore vote in favor of his confirmation.
But he repeatedly refused to call Putin a "war criminal" and dodged numerous questions. Senate Democrats, who number 48, would likely have needed all three - McCain, Graham and Rubio - to block Tillerson's confirmation.
