Lenovo has updated its Miix model with the new Miix 720, a Windows 10 detachable PC that comes with the Lenovo Active Pen 2. And, of course, you can remove it whenever you like and just use the touchscreen on the tablet, plus the optional Active Pen 2 stylus.
All this comes with a battery which Lenovo claims will get you up to 8 hours of usage on a single charge, although we suspect actual real life usage will deplete the capacity a little sooner than that.
Connectivity comprises of a USB Type-C port, along with one USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 connector, plus there's 2x2 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 on board, too.
The Lenovo's 12-inch screen is smaller than the 12.3-inch screen on the Surface Pro 4 but displays images at a higher resolution. The compact machine weighs slightly over 1 kg.
As well as that, there's the infrared camera up top for use with Windows Hello, allowing you to unlock the tablet just by looking at it, and a 5-megapixel camera on the back. Unlike the Surface, though, the keyboard is included with the Miix at its starting price of $999 (approximately AU$1,400 or £800). Available in two Champagne Gold and Iron Gray, it will be available from April 2017. Lenovo's commitment to creating smarter pens is based in large part on a growing body of research demonstrating that digital pens are better suited to intrinsic human cognition, including conceptualizing, prototyping, sketching, memorizing, and good old-fashioned brainstorming. The device can run either Windows 10 Home or Pro, and also comes with Intel HD integrated graphics 620. Surface Pro 4 only has one full-sized USB 3.0 port.
As for battery life, that's rated at up to 15.5 hours Lenovo says, giving plenty of longevity for when you're out and about. It also sports Intel's latest processor lineup, along with a full set of USB ports for decent levels of expansion. Those capabilities are available on the Surface Pro 4. The improved dual kickstand hinges offer a noticeably smoother movement compared to previous Miix detachables while also remaining firm when you move the kickstand into its final position. Lenovo Active Pen 2 starts at $59.99, available beginning in February 2017.
