Gold (Robert Carlyle) tells the Evil Queen (Lana Parilla) that she must kill Zelena aka the Wicked Witch (Rebecca Mader), and the EQ makes a decision that will change her relationship with her sister forever. The episode reveals surprising details about the childhood of Rumple as "Once Upon A Time" attempts to humanize him once more. Still determined to stop Rumple any way she can, she dreamt of her son speaking to her telling her that what she is looking for is "right in front" of her.
All season long, Belle has been grappling with keeping her child away from Rumple, who's been breaking bad (and kissing Evil Queens) more often than not lately. If it is the latter, then it will be pretty clear that he will have no use for the Queen and he can move forward. In "Changeling" we find out that his mother abandoned him at birth, and we already knew that his father also abandoned him. She wakes up face-down in a book, which she brings to Emma and Hook to figure out what it means.
Our second growing theory is that the Black Fairy - a.k.a Rumple's mom - could be under the hood.
Back in Storybrooke, Belle is rummaging through the library to find a book to stop Rumple. With that, Blue and Gideon disappear just as Rumple shows up. He's met by the Evil Queen, who confesses that she's the one who dosed Belles tea with the aging powder to poison her against him.
In the past, Belle is reading a book to the baby, when she comes up with the brilliant idea to escape with the baby.
Can Emma save Belle's baby as she goes into early labor? When she finds out it's because of Rumplestiltskin, Regina realizes that the Evil Queen still has a hole in her heart, like she did when she first created Storybrooke. While Rumple's treatment of Belle has certainly been eyebrow raise-worthy this season, "Changelings" did a great job of contextualizing Rumple's damaged nature in the abandonments (by both his mother and father) that he'd faced in the past. She gave the baby, named Gideon, to the Blue Fairy.
Rumple goes back to his shop where the Evil Queen is waiting.
While Emma and Hook are searching Rumple's shop, Emma has another vision.
Her first act after giving birth was to seek out Blue, a fairy, and ask her to be the child's fairy godmother.
Side note: It still remains unclear whether Belle gave their son the same name as their adult son, who viewers have been led to believe is Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams. In the last scene of "Changeling", Emma and Hook walk through his trashed shop. Echoing Snow and Charming giving up baby Emma for her to have her "best chance" all those years before, Belle gave up her son. Meanwhile, Jasmine finds a genie-less lamp that she hopes to use to save Agrabah, and Aladdin finds a way to be her hero. Though the vision is blurry, it appears that she is stabbed in the gut with a sword. Emma just says that the sword that will kill her has a red jewel on it.
Yes the meltynautes, you read right: episode 10 will be the final episode proposed in 2016.
