No. 6 Washington tops No. 23 Washington State 45-17

If they can win their regular season finale, they'll essentially be in the College Football Playoff.

The Washington Huskies moved up to No. 4 in both the AP and Coaches polls Sunday following their 45-17 blowout of Washington State in the Apple Cup.

Memphis 48, Houston 44 - In what might be sought-after coach Tom Herman's final game with the No. 18 Cougars, Riley Ferguson threw a 10-yard touchdown pass with 19 seconds left in a wild fourth quarter to lift the Tigers in Memphis, Tenn.

Jake Browning and No. 5 Washington passed its final test of the regular season thanks to one almost ideal quarter.

"I don't even think we psyched ourselves out", the standout receiver said.

As always on the day after, it's time to recount the positives and negatives from Washington's most recent football game, this one a 45-17 victory over Washington State in the Apple Cup that clinched the Pac-12 North championship.

The Huskies will play No. 9 Colorado or No. 12 USC in the Pac-12 title game in Santa Clara, Calif. Colorado will advance if it beats No. 22 Utah on Saturday in Boulder, Colo. You can watch the game on Q13 FOX.

Arkansas took a 7-0 lead in the first minute after a 66-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage set up a 1-yard touchdown by Rawleigh Williams.

Browning threw 18- and 61-yard touchdown passes to Dante Pettis and a 6-yarder to John Ross as the Huskies (11-1, 8-1) took a 28-3 lead and rolled to a meeting with the Pac-12 South victor next Friday.

Washington State is 6-1 ATS in its last six games after a loss and will be seeking revenge from last year's horrid defeat mostly due to Falk being unable to play because of concussion protocol.

"It's what we expected".

Yes, we all know that Ryan Leaf was an epic bust, but other Cougs to do well in the league include Super Bowl champion Drew Bledsoe. Cougars wide receiver Gabe Marks caught 11 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown.

After the Cougars found some light with a 15-play, 69-yard touchdown drive to start the third quarter, Washington's defense answered the call once again after the offense stalled into a three-and-out.

If Washington State QB Luke Falk is given time to throw, he should be able to find gaps against Washington's stellar secondary.

"I think it's good", Petersen said of Friday's victory, "but I think we have a lot more ball to play". That pasting in Seattle raised doubts about the Huskies' viability as the Pac-12's best team.

It became a purple party for the Huskies that made the trip over the Cascade Mountains to the Palouse.

With Washington State trying to cut into a 28-3 deficit, Jamal Morrow returned a punt 64 yards to the Huskies 6-yard line.

The Cougars also came up short on a second-quarter possession when they went for it on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yad line, and Wicks was stopped at the 1. Those goal-line stands, plus another WSU drive deep into Husky territory that ended with a Luke Falk interception from the Washington 9 just before halftime, were essentially the ball game. The Cougars have created nine more turnovers than they've given up, placing them among the top teams in the league in that regard. "Look, that's the difference between Washington and Washington State and between like MI and Ohio State". But it fits the theme and is certain to cause half of the Apple Cup's devotees an additional bout of indigestion.

Petersen said WSU's frequent defensive-line shifts and the crowd noise caused the procedure penalties. TCU outscored Texas 129-26 in winning three straight in the series for the first time since 1935-38.

Washington's first half was a picture of dominance, punctuated by big plays that left the Cougars playing chase from the start. After the Washington Huskies scored to go up 42-17 in the 4 th quarter, someone threw a water bottle onto the field. In this case, it is next Friday's Pac-12 title game for the Huskies against either USC or Colorado. After holding California and Arizona to a combined 28 points, the Cougars gave up more than 500 total yards for the second straight week.
