Nine people were shot and one was killed in an early morning shooting on famed Bourbon Street in the New Orleans French Quarter.

"A total of 10 victims were shot in the incident on Bourbon Street".

Five of the victims were released from a hospital by Sunday night, and four remained hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, the police superintendent said. One man died at a hospital.

The New Orleans Police Department are continuing their investigations into the shooting which took place near the intersection of Bourbon and Iberville.

"This was not the place or time to bring firearms to the Bayou Classic or any event", said Police Superintendent Michael Harrison, according to CNN affiliate WVUE.

Harrison said officers were in the immediate area as part of NOPD's coverage plan for the annual Bayou Classic football game.

Their ages range from 20-37 years old, Harrison said.

"Very tragic, unacceptable set of circumstances", New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, who was at the shooting site, told reporters. Officers also arrested another man for illegal possession of a handgun.

"Anybody who has any information about what happened out here - what you saw, what you heard - we're asking you to call us", Harrison said. Police and EMS were on scene and responded fast.

Two people were arrested for possession of firearms but it was unclear if they were the shooters responsible for the incident on Sunday.
