City's Nolito: We pressured Barcelona

Pep Guardiola hopes his Manchester City players who sunk Barcelona 3-1 in the Champions League can prove to be trailblazers for the club.

Having avenged their 4-0 drubbing at the Nou Camp a fortnight ago, De Bruyne has said the rest of Europe have no seen what they can do in the "well deserved victory".

"We had a very clear chance on the play with André (Gomes), but we were not fortunate enough to score on it. Mistakes really cost you in these games".

After taking 21 minute lead on a Lionel Messi goal, Barca could not find control in the match as they were overrun by City's high pressing and conceded three goals in total. Perhaps in the first half Barcelona dominated the game a bit more but the goal just before half-time was important for our confidence.

City began the game on a bright note and were matching Barcelona toe-to-toe, tackle-to-tackle for the first 15 minutes.

City will reach the knockout phase of the Champions League if they defeat Borussia Monchengladbach on November 23. They were aggressive and provoked more errors from us than we did from them.

"At the beginning it was hard, we made a few mistakes, but I think the second half was very good and we deserved it".

On his free-kick, which gave City the lead in the 51st minute, De Bruyne admitted he benefited from an error from goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Guardiola's team produced a performance that has been lacking from City in the Champions League in recent seasons, with De Bruyne, Gundogan, Raheem Sterling, and Sergio Aguero specifically singled out for praise on a wonderful evening in Manchester. But maybe today is a good step to say once in our lives we play against the best team and we compete against them.

"Of course now they realise, 'Wow, we (beat) the best team, ' so we are able to do that".

"Now we have one more game to win to go in February (to the last 16), and hopefully then it will be good, or better, to keep us going".

It was their second victory in four days after a six-game winless streak and De Bruyne says they must now back up those results with a win over Middlesbrough on Saturday to stay top of the Premier League going into the worldwide break. We try and now we won against the best team.

"We have to take positive and negative conclusions from the game. Also we defended with low blocks and used our counter-attack against them". I thought Messi said something to me but he didn't, and then we talked about other stuff.
