Clinton said that, in particular, she would "love to see" young people turn out to vote in big numbers.

In all, 37 states permit some form of early voting, either in person or by mail.

Pelosi said Thursday she is "very confident that the makings of a wave are there", but noted the election is still more than five weeks away.

"I want this election to be about something, not just about somebody", Clinton said, as she talked about climate change, equal pay for women, paid family leave, jobs, education, economic growth and more.

In Des Moines, Mrs Clinton planned a speech focused on childcare challenges faced by middle-class families.

In 2008, Obama, then a little-known senator from IL, bested this year's Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in the primary and defeated U.S. Sen.
