Governor to meet with mayor after mall attack

Local Somali community leaders held a press conference Sunday afternoon, condemning the actions of the suspect in the stabbing. Likewise, St. Cloud Police Chief William Blair Anderson told CNN on Sunday he was unable to confirm if the mall stabbings were anything more than a lone attack. Local activists also identified Dahir Adan as Somali.

On Sunday, the Associated Press reported an Islamic State-run news agency called Rasad claimed the suspect was a "soldier of the Islamic State".

Reuters was not immediately able to verify the Amaq claim.

The FBI said it is investigating the attack - which targeted seven men and two women ranging in age from 15 to 53 - as a possible act of terrorism.

"Whenever something as bad as this happens, it's hard for things to be the same as they were", the police chief said.

"The Somali community was working very hard when we heard the tragedy of the incident", Mohamed said. One student had said Somali-Americans were called IS members and had their headscarves pulled off.

"Let us unite as one Minnesota", Hersi said.

"Thirty years of relationship building could be undone by this one incident", he said. A cell phone found inside an un-detonated device on 27th Manhattan on Saturday was linked to Rahami, law enforcement sources said.

Ahmed Said, executive director of the Somali American Relations Council, said it remained unclear if religion motivated the attack.

The Somali community in the U.S. state of Minnesota braced for a backlash Monday after a man who stabbed 10 people in a mall over the weekend was identified as one of their own. The largest share of that group has settled in the Minneapolis area, including one neighborhood near the University of Minnesota campus that's been dubbed "Little Mogadishu".

Federal investigators have tracked the recruitment of potential ISIS fighters in Minnesota.

In 2013, CAIR called on police in nearby Waite Park to reject a training program about Somalis because a flier unfairly suggested the activities of al-Shabab - a militant group in east Africa that has had success in recruiting Somali-Americans in Minnesota - are supported by most Muslims. More than 20 young men have left the state since 2007 to join al-Shabab in Somalia; the U.S. considers the eastern Africa militants group a terrorist group.

Carranza said police were checking identification and taking names of everyone as they were released from the mall.

Target employees huddled in the mens' clothing department, Bellow said his brother had communicated by text message.

The growth in the Somali refugee population in St. Cloud has escalated tensions, particularly in the school system.

President Obama said that the Minnesota attack was not believed to be connected to suspected bomber Ahmad Rahami's planting explosives in NY and New Jersey.

"This community, after this horrific tragedy, will move forward", he said.

The girls left the mall before the lockdown was implemented and saw a police auto arriving as they left the mall parking lot, Weires said.

The couple escaped unharmed and said they helped another woman who was running from the scene to her auto.

"There were so many cop cars just responding to the area", Bayne said. Weires said they got to the mall at about 8:10 p.m. and started shopping in stores near JC Penney.

Attacker wore a private security uniform and made references to Allah.

Nine people were injured, but no one died, in Saturday evening's attack at the Crossroads Center mall.

Kleis says it's been a trying time for the city and that he has tremendous respect for the off-duty officer who shot and killed the attacker.

Authorities declined to identify the suspect, who was killed by an off-duty policeman, because the investigation was under way.

Police officials said they were still interviewing witnesses hours after the attack. Anderson said Falconer fired as the attacker was lunging at him with the knife, and continued to engage him as the attacker got up three times.

"Not only did he fire, the suspect went down, came back up on three different occasions", Kleis said. None of the injured suffered life-threatening wounds.

"It's an terrible day", Anderson said. They don't know what happened after that.

Cloud, Minn. was closed Sunday, Sept. 18, after Saturday's stabbing incident.

Dayton met with St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis and other city officials before the news conference. The 2016 New Jersey bombing occurred on the same day. No injuries were reported.

After the stabber was confirmed dead, the police chief said two search warrants were executed at an address in St. Cloud, and the suspect's vehicle has been impounded.
