Jay Bruce heads to Mets, strengthens their outfield

"Tomorrow night when we get Ces' back in there, I'll tell you what, that's going to be a unique looking lineup with those big bats in the middle", the manager said. The Mets were tied to Bruce a year ago before acquiring Yoenis Cespedes from the Tigers.

"We would not have done the deal without the extra year of control", Alderson said. It's always kind of players vs. team.

Bruce can be an impact guy, as he has shown in eight-plus years with the Reds. A downside has been his career-long penchant for following a torrid streak with an incredibly cold one. Bruce is hitting No. 3 tonight and will probably be the cleanup hitter when Yoenis Cespedes is in the lineup, starting tomorrow. Bruce has a $13 million team option for next season. Niese, who pitched for the Mets from 2008-15, was dealt in the offseason for second baseman Neil Walker.

The thumping RF will now get a chance at a playoff spot with NY.

Cincinnati is into its second year of rebuilding, trading any high-priced veteran it can.

The Reds have not announced anything, but sources say a deal is close.

If they slip up and don't make the playoffs this season, it could be a waste, but the odds are this trade should work for both sides. So does the cost, because even though the Mets liked second baseman Dilson Herrera ("He's a little like Devon Travis", a National League scout said Monday), he's not as exciting as Michael Fulmer, the pitcher they gave up for what could have been two months of Cespedes.

Nimmo, the highlight of the package sent to the Reds, has hit just.236 with a HR and 5 RBIs in his short big league career (18 games) but is hitting an impressive.336 in Triple-A this year. "[Bruce] has been a run producer". If he doesn't have to miss significant time, he'll get playing time in center field when the Mets face lefties-this was Juan Lagares' main role until he went down with a thumb injury last week.

For a good portion of past year and during the team's playoff run, Michael Conforto occupied left field. He made some critical comments about New York's defense after joining the Pirates. Manager Terry Collins is hoping that Cespedes can return to center once his right quadriceps improves. "There's still some guys that are still here that were here past year".

Cabrera will likely be out for a few weeks due to the strained patellar tendon he recently suffered, but instead of opting to use Gavin Cecchini at shortstop, the Mets will continue to go with Matt Reynolds, with Wilmer Flores at third base. Curtis Granderson has not played up to his career marks and Michael Conforto took a major step back after an impressive rookie campaign in 2015 including two home runs in the World Series past year.
