Donald Trump loses battle with Teleprompter in GOP acceptance speech

Capping off a week full of surprises, SNAFUs and ceremony, the Republican nominee for President delivered a scripted acceptance speech noteworthy not for what was in it, but what wasn't - Donald Trump's signature off-prompter ad libs.

The dark portrait of America that Mr Trump sketched was a compendium of doomsday statistics that fell apart on close scrutiny of the media.

On the final day of the convention, where Trump himself was slated to give his big address, the morning headlines were dominated by something he'd already said, to the New York Times.

I shouldn't be quoting the movie "Tootsie" twice in a month, but it came to mind again Wednesday night as I watched more wild happenings at the Republican convention.

Not only was he the star of the show, he upstaged it. Trump at one point called Fox News Channel host Bill O'Reilly while the convention was going on, diverting attention from the proceedings on the floor. But he relied on statistics ripe for manipulation, cited misleading numbers on the economy, for example, through selective use of years, data and sources.

Cruz's speech emphasized the need for a divided America to "return to freedom" and unify behind a leader. He said that as President, the USA would only defend North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies against Russian invasions if they fulfilled their obligations to us. Instead he said, "Donald Trump!".

"If a convention's goal is to unite our behind one candidate, Senator Cruz didn't get the memo", fellow Texan and former Governor Rick Perry told CNN.

Meanwhile, one woman at the Texas delegation breakfast spoke on behalf of Cruz.

The upset came hours after Team Trump moved to draw a line under a damaging plagiarism row implicating his ex-model wife - that overshadowed the opening of the Cleveland gathering. On Wednesday, Cruz shocked the convention hall in a speech in which he failed to endorse Trump.

The convention's four days were dominated at times by controversies that distracted from Trump's message.

"I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father", Cruz said. Among them was Randall Dunning, an alternate delegate from Garland who called Trump's speech "phenomenal". "This was my mistake and I feel bad for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama", she said in a statement. Plenty of politicians have run as law and order candidates, as Mr Trump said he is doing.

It was a predictably narcissistic prelude to an unusually dark speech, delivered with Trump's trademark hyperbole, threats and falsehoods.

I saw Kate Dries' boyfriend, David Muir.

In a year when the Republican Party has struggled with its identity, a fractured base and a bruising primary, however, pro-Trump Republicans were hoping for a little more from Cruz then they had seen in the past.

"I don't have to go back to Texas and explain why I was part of the problem and not part of the solution", Perry added.

"If you love our country and love your children as much as I know that you do, stand and speak and vote your conscience", he said as the crowd erupted into yells of anger and chants of "Trump!" We all know that.

"We are going to have an immigration system that works, but one that works for the American people", according to Trump's speech draft.

Her one-time Democratic rival Bernie Sanders also wrote in a tweet: "Trump: 'I alone can fix this.' Is this guy running for president or dictator?'" "Now Ted never denied that it was his father".
