Flooding closes I-10 at Louisiana-Texas state line

Water releases from Toledo Bend Dam are largely responsible for the flooding downstream along the Sabine River. Twelve 12 tornadoes or possible tornadoes were reported in Arkansas on Sunday and overnight, Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth said.

Flooding caused by days of heavy rain forced the closure on Tuesday of a section of a major east-west US highway on the Louisiana-Texas border along the rising Sabine River, officials in both states said.

Mandatory evacuations were underway Monday in a Texas town that has been practically cut off from the rest of the world by floodwaters rising to record levels.

"You would either have to go south of here to LA 82, Johnson Bayou, or north of here to say, LA 6 or even LA 8 in order to cross the Sabine River", said Sgt. James Anderson, Louisiana State Police Troop D spokesman.

Officials in Deweyville planned to provide an update Tuesday.

"This is going to be a awful flood", Dick Gremillion, Calcasieu's director of emergency preparedness, told NBC station KPLC of Lake Charles.

Two other people in the boat were safely rescued, but the incident brought the death toll from the storms to at least six.

Authorities say more than 400 homes have been flooded in Newton County and they fear all of Deweyville's homes will be inundated with flood water.

Texas administrators are keeping in close contact with Louisiana DOTD administrators.

Since last Wednesday, the Louisiana National Guard has reported 4,255 rescues and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has reported 700, GOHSEP said. But we are making preparations, just in case that does happen.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office warned residents to prepare for potential record flooding along the Pearl River, which the National Weather Service said is expected to crest above flood stage some time Monday.
